Traditional serenity and modern energy are two opposite experiences of Kansai, which are available in Kyoto and Osaka, which are separated by only 30 minutes by train. Before the city of Osaka and its hustle and bustle Kyoto should be on the list of the first timers because of the cultural richness that is unmatched.

Kyoto’s Timeless Allure
Kyoto has 17 UNESCO sites, such as Fushimi Inari torii gates, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and the golden gloss of Kinkaku-ji. There are more than 1,600 temples such as Kiyomizu-dera where people can escape and meditate under cherry blossoms or autumn leaves. The geisha district of Gion and Philosopher Path reminds feudal Japan. Three days here can furnish iconic pictures and soul-inspiring hikes; the crowds are at their most extreme at hotspots and therefore get there before daybreak.

Osaka’s Vibrant Pulse
Osaka is a place of street food: takoyaki balls, okonomiyaki pancakes, kushikatsu skewers, all of which are sold in glowing neon-lit Dotonbori. Osaka Castle is a historical marvel; Universal Studios Japan is a family fun park. The retro atmosphere of Shinsekai and the views of Umeda Sky Building demonstrate the revival of the postwar. Well developed subways serve as a shopping heaven such as Shinsaibashi. It is not so touristy, and the nightlife is very Japanese, beating till daylight.

Key Differences
Kyoto is more concerned with nature-based heritage (temples, gardens); Osaka is based on cuisine and entertainment (food stands, aquariums). Kyoto is a place that fits those who visit the city out of curiosity (culture), romance, photography; Osaka is the place that fits those who visit the city out of appetite (foodies), family, and party. Osaka has a better chance of weather as the humidity is lower, whereas the greenery of Kyoto is seasonal. Prices are the same, 120-180/day either, but Kyoto accommodations are occupied sooner.

Why Visit Kyoto First
Begin with Kyoto to establish a base in the heart of Japan its 2,000 shrines provide a background to the innovations of Osaka. Osaka Day-trip Osaka is well reachable by Kyoto Station (JR line, $5). The reversal of rushes Kyoto in its nature, and modern vibes come second. Five days total: 3 Kyoto, 2 Osaka. Shoulder seasons (Jan-Mar, Oct) avoid sakura/golden week crowds.

Transport hub Base in Osaka, but sleep in Kyoto ryokans to be immersed. Both enrich, Kyoto spiritually, Osaka viscerally, and tradition and progress go hand in hand with each other.

The post Kyoto vs Osaka: Which City Should You Visit First? first appeared on ICOM Kyoto 2019.
